Turnips

Availability:

Late June - November

History:

The turnip originated in northern Asia and has been used throughout Asia and Europe since prehistoric times. It is a member of the brassica (cabbage) family. The turnip is similar to the rutabaga.

Medicinal* Uses:

Raw grated turnip serves as a digestive aid, similar to radish and daikon. Turnips clear heat, dissolve phlegm, moisten, and cool and strengthen the blood. They are good for general detoxification.

Cooking Suggestions:

Use fresh young turnips in salad as you would a radish. Cooking further sweetens turnips and mellows their bite. Use in soups and casseroles, steam them on their own, roast them or bake them.
